One of the most important skills of a leader, or any adult, is to be able to listen to oneself. You have all heard people ranting on and on about how stupid something or someone is, bad-mouthing others and complaining without end.
Just stop already! Listen to yourself. This world doesn’t need more of that.
My friend Ray has something to complain about. He has a serious and aggressive form of cancer for which he is undergoing 8 hours of very complicated surgery tomorrow with a chance that he may not survive. Yet on Monday, Ray taught me that while you can’t control what happens to you in life you are in complete control of how you live. His prayer is that his cancer would not be wasted.
There’s a man who has learned to listen to himself and be in control of who he is and the life he is leading.
Ray’s surgery was not successful. His cancer has spread to his liver and is inoperable. But he is committed to living the life he has been given, and living it well. I am thankful for him and how he has helped me become aware of my own stupid pettiness. The world needs more Rays of sunshine.
Perspective is a rare gift, I think. I thank Ray for that.
