A Blogload of Coolness

I’m presenting a session at the upcoming conference for the Pacific Association of College Registrars and Admissions Officers (PACRAO) in Calgary, starting on Sunday. I hope to see you there, and I hope you’ll come to my session. Here’s a small teaser of what I’ll be speaking about.

The conference theme is “Cool” with an emphasis on the new and cool stuff we do. In the spirit of this theme, my presentation is called, “A Blogload of Coolness: Who Wants to Be a Registrar?” I will be answering the following questions:

  • Who would ever want to be a Registrar? Isn’t it about as exciting as watching paint dry? Not cool!
  • A Registrar raises the coolness factor by presenting new ideas and demystifying the profession every week on his blog.
  • Looking for an innovative training resource? Want ideas on new ways to serve students? Got staff who don’t really “get it”? Have a boss who doesn’t really “get it”? Looking for new service models?
  • This session will present all these while making you look cool.

Hopefully those questions draw you in and make you want to come hear my session; however, if you’re still not convinced, let me try one more thing. I believe we’re facing a problem of EPIC proportions: no one thinks being a Registrar is cool! We don’t run into burning buildings to save people. We don’t do car chases. We don’t carry guns. No one makes TV drama series of us using DNA samples from bodies mangled beyond belief to solve the ultimate crime.

It’s time to change that. And I’m going to do something about it, starting Sunday. Are you with me? Come to PACRAO 2010.

  1. wait hold on, are you saying you’re going to “change that” and Registrars are going to start running into burning buildings, having car chases, carrying guns, and solving crimes, or that you’re just changing the “not cool” mentality? I vote for the former.

  2. I’ll be there Grant! Sounds like I need to wear a sweater!

And I really think we should pitch a TV series to CBC — like “Numb3rs” but maybe called “FTEs”…

Break a leg — in the best possible sense!
