Earth Day and the Registrar’s Office

Today is Earth Day and that got me thinking of the various ways Registrars attempt to “green up” our offices and business practices. I recently attended a British Columbia Registrars Association conference which had the theme “Going Green with BCRA: An environment for change”. Several of the presentations focused directly on this subject and a few gave detailed plans of how to reduce paper or otherwise reduce the carbon footprint of the institution. On idea that has been near and dear to my heart for 10 years is document imaging, which means taking paper documents and turning them into electronic documents. This helps in reducing storage space as well as reducing the chance of losing the paper as it gets sent around the university. The Registrar at BCIT (British Columbia Institute of Technology) gave a great presentation of how she led her office into a document-imaging solution. Her Powerpoint presentation, as well as several other presentations, can be viewed at this link http://students.sfu.ca/bcra09/
